October 2007 Desperate Iraqi refugees, some as young as 12, are turning to prostitution to survive. Banned from working in Syria, prostitution is one of the few options available to them "The number of Iraqi children working as prostitutes is very high" states Bassam Al-Kadi. "They are virgins, brought here like an investment and exploited in a very ugly way". These girls often provide the sole income for their families. If arrested and deported, they are often brought straight back to Damascus by organised sex networks.

Mobile phone footage - said to be of the aftermath of a US helicopter raid inside Syria - has been given to Al Jazeera.   It shows helicopters flying over a Syrian village and the bodies of the victims of the raid.   Paul Allen has our report. Warning: Contains images some viewers may find distressful.

The Listening Post's Salah Khadr looks at the US air raid on Eastern Syria last month, and the way that story was covered. There are two conflicting narratives: Damascus says four US helicopters illegally entered Syrian airspace from Iraq and killed innocent civilians; Washington says the target was a senior al-Qaeda figure. The eyewitness accounts and amateur video footage shown on Syrian TV posed a lot of questions that remain unanswered by the Pentagon and ignored by the Western media. We look at the difficulties of differentiating between truth and propaganda. In this week's Newsbytes: Israeli soldiers are put on trial for posting video evidence on YouTube of abusing a Palestinian civilian; the Pentagon launches TroopTube a tool for families to post messages to soldiers on the frontline; Syria backs a new TV channel aimed at Palestinians; strikes are affecting the broadcast of Indian soap operas; and the spoof edition of the New York Times with the headline 'Iraq War Ends' is exposed. Finally, for our Video of the Week the animators at satirical website 23/6 take a dig at the latecomers who've just jumped on board the Obama bandwagon.

Syria has ordered the closure of the American School and the US cultural centre in Damascus. The closures are a response to a deadly cross-border raid carried out on Sunday, October 26, 2008. Damascus blames the US for the attack on a Syrian village near Abu Kamal, close to the border with Iraq. Syria called the raid criminal and terrorist aggression, while Washington called it a successful operation. Eight Syrians were killed in a US raid on the village of Sukariya. We ask: Is the Bush administration trying to make a desperate point in its final days? Is it warning Syria, or is the US foreign policy likely to change with the new administration?

September 2006 War in Lebanon has dramatically altered the political spectrum in Syria. Support for Hezbollah is strong, and many now call for the re-capture of the Golan Heights. In a nationally televised address to the Syrian Journalist Union, President Bashar al Assad issued a stark warning to Israel; "Your weapons, warplanes, rockets and even your atomic bombs will not protect you". He is playing a dangerous game. Syria's secularism is under attack. Posters of Nasrallah are selling on the streets like hotcakes; "we keep running out of them". And 90% of women wear the veil. As economist Ayman Abdel Nour points out, "the biggest danger for Assad's regime is radical Islam", so why does he allow and encourage it now? Is Bashar Assad pursuing this policy to increase his political strength and refocus the nation back to; "our one cause -- the Golan Heights"? Yet, as Nour admits; "Syria cannot open a direct war with Israel. We cannot win". Instead Assad hopes to force the US into talks, offering himself as the only moderate voice, whilst at the same time "supporting Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas, and jihad in Israel." If Assad plays his cards wrong, the worry is that sunni Sheik Mohammad Hasbah's prediction of "more violence and bloodshed in the Middle East" could come true.
